Blackie And The Rodeo Kings "Kings And Queens" Canada's supergroup (Stephen Fearing, Tom Wilson & Colin Linden) collaborate with and pay tribute to some of their favourite females including Roseanne Cash, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Pam Tillis & Serena Ryder. Nice to hear Kenny Pearson on organ on most of the songs as well.
Ray Bonneville "Bad Man's Blood" Intense, swamp and stompin' blues from one our favourites.
Jeff Bridges "Jeff Bridges" He's a hell of an actor.
Bright Eyes "The People's Key" I'm not much of a science fiction fan but I am a fan of Bright Eyes.
Michael Jerome Browne "The Road Is Dark" Career best album from blues guitarist extraordinaire who makes Montreal home.
Glen Campbell "Ghost On the Canvas" Farewell from The Rhinestone Cowboy who's dying of Alzheimer's disease. Title track written by Paul Westerberg. Sadly ironic for me as a music trip to NYC several years ago took me to Feinstein's At The Regency to see Glen Campbell & Jimmy Webb perform together, the late soul great Ruth Brown packed 'em in at the Jazz Au Bar on East 58th (no longer exists) while Westerberg was at The Supper Club. Again I say, if you've always wanted to see somebody live, and they aren't coming to Montreal, make sure you catch them somewhere. No better place than NYC. All three shows back in 2005 were spectacular.
Johnny Cash "From Memphis To Hollywood Bootleg Vol II" & "Live Around The World Bootleg Vol III" This collection is for Cash completists only. It is interesting to hear Johnny as radio announcer in the 1950's, early demos of his classics and his entire set (solo) from the 1964 Newport Folk Festival but the Cash family is scraping at this point.
Guy Clark "Songs And Stories" Career spanning acoustic treatment of one of America's most important songwriters on stage in Nashville.
Gary Clark Jr. "The Bright Lights EP" Can't wait for the full album. Brilliant young guitarist has some people whispering comparisons to the greatest. Won't be playing Divan Orange again.
Ry Cooder "Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down" Nobody is making better music with a stronger message than Ry Cooder. An American treasure.
Jim Cuddy "Skyscraper Soul" Love letter to Toronto. Don't hold it against him. It's great.
Dawes "Nothing Is Wrong" This fouresome (including brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith) does great job chaneling Jackson Browne, The Eagles and the whole Laurel Canyon feel of the 1970's.
The Decemberists "The King Is Dead" Another young throwback band that should have been alongside Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers with Dylan at The Grammys.
Brett Dennen "Loner Boy" 32 year old American folkie who looks 10 years younger and might be better than Bright Eyes.
John Doe "Keeper" It sure is.
Drive By Truckers "Go-Go Boots" My favourite American band. Three great vocalists and songwriters. Direct lineage to Muscle Shoals. Dedicated to Vic Chestnutt.
Steve Earle "I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive" Partially written for his late father. This is one Americana artist who does not need any help from T Bone Burnett but received it nonetheless.
Elliott Brood "Days Into Years" Alternative country from Hogtown. Real keen Canadian music fans will know of a tie - in with former Montreal darlings of the Alt Country movement The United Steelworkers Of Montreal (among the less joyous stories from 2011 was the break up of the Steelworkers as well as The Stills).
The Felice Brothers "Celebration, Florida" First saw their frenzied live act at Bonnaroo in 2008. Indie folk roots rock from The Catskills.
Rory Gallagher "Irish Tour" Late Irish guitar god getting the royal reissue treatment he richly deserves.
Woody Guthrie "Live Wire In Performance 1949" Not much live Woody Guthrie to experience unless it's the travelling tribute show put together by daughter Nora that hit the Ottawa Folk Festival a few years back. This rare recording (originally released in 2008) features Guthrie and his second wife Marjorie kibitzing with about 50 people in a downtown Newark hall during the winter of 1949. Fascinating but not riveting.
Emmylou Harris "Hard Bargain" My favourite female singer. A hot 64 year old. Loving tributes to Gram Parsons, Kate McGarrigle and Emmylou's big black dog.
Jimi Hendrix Experience "Hendrix In The West" & "Winterland". Hard to believe there is still this much rich material from somebody who's career spanned five years. The Winterland box set features Jimi, Noel Redding & Mitch Mitchell at the peak of their power over three nights in October 1968. Absolutely essential.
John Hiatt "Dirty Jeans And Mudslide Hymns" Has he ever made a bad album?
Hey Rosetta! "Seeds" It's been a trip watching them grow into Canada's best. Must be experienced live.
Chris Isaak "Beyond The Sun" Isaak and his band cover the greatest Sun artists of them all - Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison & Jerry Lee Lewis. And they pull it off.
Wanda Jackson "The Party Ain't Over" It sure isn't as she proved several times in Montreal over the last couple of years. A treat to have the queen of Rockabilly produced by Jack White.
The Jayhawks. "Mockingbird Time" Welcome back boys.
Garland Jeffreys "The King Of In Between" Improbable comeback by the little dynamo at age 68. One of my picks for album of the year. Some of the most inspiring live moments from 2011 took place on stage at Rubin Fogel's Club Soda including Jackson and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Dukes during the Jazz Festival and Jeffreys' two and half hour performance last month.
The Jimmyriggers "I Stand In the Weeds" I love these local guys who are slowly building a larger audience. Classic roots and rock sound with sharp songwriting skills.
Booker T. Jones "The Road From Memphis" If you love your swirling soulful Hammond B3 organ as much as I do it's tough to find better than this Hall of Famer who gets some vocal help from Jim James and Sharon Jones.
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears "Scandalous" While on the topic of classic soul and R & B (with a dash of punk)... Another live highlight of 2011 (at Salla Rosa). Andie Bennett's favourite band.
Hugh Laurie "Let Them Talk" A better musician than Jeff Bridges. Not by much.
G. Love "Fixin' To Die" Without his special sauce. An unexpected treat produced by Avett Brothers.
Nick Lowe "The Old Magic" One of the tracks is called "Sensitive Man". That about sums up his latest. Unforgettable solo performance opening up for Wilco. Must return to Montreal with full band.
The Low Anthem "Smart Flesh" Unique, haunting sound from Rhode Island. Can also wage an all out rock and roll assault.
Bob Marley And The Wailers "Live Forever" Entire final concert September 23, 1980 in Pittsburgh. What else is there to say?
Craig Morrison And Friends "Blowing In The Wind" A special night at Oscar Peterson Concert Hall. I was the MC. I mostly listened. You should have been there. Don't miss Craig's 15th annual Roots of Rock & Roll concert spread over two nights in early February.
My Morning Jacket "Circuital" Jim James has one of the most chillingly inspiring and unique voices in rock and roll history. The fact that he can also lead a 10 minute jam puts him near or at the head of the class of rock vocalists in 2012. One of my "I was there" moments at Bonnaroo in 2008 when My Morning Jacket performed, beginning at midnight, a four hour set in the pouring rain.
New York Dolls "Dancing Backward In High Heels" Third album as part of the Dolls return and perhaps the most musically rich. Have now released more albums in the last five years than they did when they first hit the scene and then broke up in the early 1970's.
North Mississippi All Stars ""Keys to The Kingdom" Luther and Cody Dickinson honour their late father Jim. With help from Mavis Staples, Ry Cooder and Spooner Oldham.
Roy Orbison "The Monument Singles Collection (1960 - 1964). Every single and B side plus a DVD of a 1965 concert. Brilliant.
John Prine "The Singing Mailman Delivers" Very early studio and live performances of some of Prine's greatest tunes, written while he was still a full time mailman in Chicago. Hearing Prine sing "Sam Stone", "Hello In There", "Angel From Montgomery" and so many others to an unsuspecting regular crowd at The Fifth Peg Club in Chicago in November 1970 is fly-on-the-wall-history-in-the-making. His first studio LP would not be released until several months later.
Red Hot Chili Peppers "I'm With You" Some have complained about John Frusciante's missing guitar licks but I love this album.
Sam Roberts Band "Collider" Almost a full hour of proud Montrealer Sam and mates (nice to see him add the "Band" to his name). Can we call it Classic Canadian Rock?
Tom Russell "Mesabi" Tom Russell is so good at everything he does. Would love to see him on the big screen. He's created enough characters and written about so many others.
The Sheepdogs "Learn & Burn" More Canadiana. These kids earned their way onto the cover of Rolling Stone. An inspired FM Rock station would play "I Don't Know" followed by The Guess Who's "Running Back To Saskatoon".
The Kenny Wayne Sheppard Band "How I Go" Stole the show at the traveling Hendrix Tribute at Metropolis. This album solidifies his rep. He also gets a nod of respect from SRV bassist Tommy Shannon.
Paul Simon "So Beautiful Or So What" Simon's best in years, maybe decades.
Todd Snider "Live The Storyteller" Hippie dippy pot smoking Jesus loving witty songwriter/raconteur. Once played the old Club One for BillyBob Productions on Oscar night in front of about, oh, maybe 10 people.
Social Distortion "Hard Times And Nursery Rhymes" There is much, much more to this than the brilliant cover of Hank Williams' "Alone And Forsaken". Another candidate for album of the year.
Tedeschi/Trucks band "Revelator" As was the case with Derek Trucks' last effort ("Already Free") this might be the most joyous album of the year. Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks might be the best husband/wife team in music since Louis Prima and Keely Smith (look them up).
The Strokes "Angles" Maybe if they weren't such bloody cool New Yorkers...
Kurt Vile "Smoke Rings For My Halo" Thirty something guitarist - songwriter from suburban Philly who's a big Springsteen fan. Keep an eye on him.
Tom Waits "Bad As Me" Tug of war for album of the year with (see below). Now when the hell does he finally show up in Montreal again?
Wilco "The Whole Love" Unlike Waits I actually got to see Jeff Tweedy and his friends on stage in my city. Nobody does rock and roll and everything it stands for better than Wilco.
Various Artists "The Lost Notebooks Of Hank Williams" Williams gets the old Wilco-Billy Bragg Woody Guthrie treatment here as some of his lyrics are transformed by Bob Dylan (he got the project rolling) and son Jakob plus Norah Jones, Jack White, Alan Jackson and Lucinda Williams. A true team effort.
Lucinda Williams "Blessed" I'm happy she's finally found happiness but some of us need a touch more angst.
Neil Young International Harvesters "A Treasure" Cowboy Neil's 1984-85 concert tour of America's heartland with the late Ben Keith on pedal steel. Superb sound. Four to five years before Neil came all the way back with 'Freedom" and "Ragged Glory". But of course, like Dylan, Neil Young never went away.

LET ME SING, AND I'M HAPPY

It's time. And it's about time.

For years now, I've heard from listeners who have suggested I list the names of the songs and artists I play during the course of a Melnick in the Afternoon show. I've tried to figure out a way to make it work without it being intrusive. And it's been staring me in the face for over two years now.

Originally this music blog was going to feature (almost) instant reviews of various concerts I've attended or attended by friends and/or relatives. Great idea. Until I get home and decide I'd rather do something else while time slips away and we get further and further away from the actual event (most recent example was Eminem at Osheaga. I had a wonderful piece planned on why more people my age ought to be paying attention to somebody who's work will continue to resonate long after he's gone. But I got sidetracked. And unlike 20 years ago when there seemed to be over 30 hours in a day, I now feel lucky if there's a totally free hour or two. Plus, I was planning to add the odd photo or two but my smart phone features a camera that ain't too bright. Another reason to take the dive into I-Phone territory. Our new bosses at Bell promise a product that will deliver. Not to mention a discount).

WASN'T THAT A PARTY? (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB DYLAN)

Wow.

Yes it was a wow kind of night at Petit Cafe Campus on Bob Dylan's 70th birthday. A very Montreal wow.

No matter who or what I'm listening to I always make it back to Dylan. At least once a month. Yes, I'm somewhat addicted (not obsessed as one Gazette Letter to the Editor suggested. If you're really looking for obsessed, you have no idea.) but it feeds my core belief about the human condition. That the head, the heart and the soul are one. And when they're all working together it's sheer beauty. Music, especially live music, gets me to that place. Dylan's music transports me out of the ballpark, out of sight and out of this world. Nobody comes close. A Bruce Springsteen concert is a live event like no other, the greatest show in rock and roll. Some of his songs are brilliant and attending a Springsteen concert can be a spiritual experience but ultimately I've always felt more affected in a physical sense. Listening to Dylan makes the experience metaphysical.

I'm constantly plugged in to a wide variety of music but in anticipation of Dylan's birthday I started working backwards all the way to his debut album in 1962, aided by the newly released Mono versions of his first eight albums plus the also recently released Witmark Demos which feature many of his classics being recorded onto tape for the very first time. The number of quality songs that Bob Dylan has written is beyond staggering. The fact that he managed to write so many great songs that also happen to be so meaningful is beyond remarkable. And that so many of these great songs have crossed the borders - often straddling them - of so many various American music genres (folk, country, blues, rock, gospel, soul) is almost beyond belief.

Bob Dylan will always be identified, mostly, with the 1960's. If, God forbid, he had never gotten up after falling off his motorcycle in Woodstock in 1966, his body of work would still be held up as a model for aspiring songwriters and performers. His troika of albums in the mid-60's, "Bringing it all Back Home", "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blonde on Blonde", recorded during an 18 month period, raised the bar to a level that's never been equalled. And doubtless, never will be. But his production in the 60's didn't stop there. While recuperating from his accident and/or an addiction to heroin (perhaps) and amphetamines (probably) Dylan and The Band recorded the highly influential "The Basement Tapes" (only a portion of which were ever officially released) followed by "John Wesley Harding" and "Nashville Skyline". No wonder he decided in 1970 to record a double album of mostly covers ("Self Portrait"). Although derided by critics, time has again proved that Dylan was way ahead of the pack. Which major rock star since has NOT put out their own version of "Self Portrait"?

Dylan in the '70's was almost as brilliant beginning with "New Morning", which featured Bob on keyboards for the majority of the songs ("What's he doing on keyboards???" has been a common complaint by some of his "fans" after attending a Dylan concert in recent years. Well, he was actually doing it 40 years ago). He composed his first film soundtrack "Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid" and then, if not replicating his mid-60s output, coming fairly close in releasing "Planet Waves", "Blood on the Tracks" and "Desire" in rapid succession. Some people point to 1978's "Street Legal" as the beginning of a decline but I love that album. It's sound was horribly muddy upon initial release but nicely cleaned up in a recent remastering. His marriage over by then, it's Dylan singing at his soulful best. As the 70's ended Dylan released "Slow Train Coming", an album that revealed his conversion to Christianity which prompted hundreds of thousands of his "fans" to replay, en masse, the chant of "Judas!" that was hurled at Dylan while on stage in Manchester, England in 1966 because he had the audacity to pick up an electric guitar. This time it was because the same guy who sang "..don't follow leaders" had apparently committed the ultimate betrayal by singing about Jesus. As somebody who has never been a believer in organized religion I did not, as many of my fellow Jews did, throw in the towel and consider him to be some kind of traitor. His vocal performances on that album - and on the tour that followed - left little doubt as to the sincerity of where he was emotionally. And, dammit, how else would I have discovered Shirley Ceasar or The Dixie Hummingbirds or The Blind Boys of Alabama?

There's no doubt Dylan floundered in the 1980's. His autobiography "Chronicles Vol. 1" explains that era well. But the 80's also featured songs like "Solid Rock", "The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar", "Every Grain of Sand", "Jokerman", "Dark Eyes", the epic "Brownsville Girl", "Silvio", "Everything is Broken", "Most of the Time" and one of his greatest ever, "Blind Willie McTell". A life's work for some. A "bad" decade for Bob Dylan.

Dylan seemed to get his groove back in the early 90's. And, as Van Morrison once suggested in concert, "It's Too Late To Stop Now!" He's still on the road, "...heading for another joint..." at age 70 bringing his body of work to a new generation of fans and, on those real good nights, reminding so many of his long time fans what attracted them in the first place. It's Dylan as performance artist. I watch him now, as I had the opportunity to do so a few months ago at UMass in Amherst, spitting out his words at the lip of the stage, to "Ballad of a Thin Man":

You see somebody naked
And you say "Who is that man?"
You try so hard
And you don't understand
Just what you will say
When you get home

Performing naked, with nothing but a harmonica in one hand while answering the never ending criticism that still comes his way. (A recent Wall Sreet Journal editorial suggested he should retire while Maureen Dowd of The New York Times raked him for agreeing to perform in China while being "censored". A claim that had no truth to it at all.)

I don't know when or even if I would have discovered Dylan if not for my late sister Cherise who was playing something off "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits" while I was reading Red Fisher in the Montreal Star. I put the paper down and walked into the room where my sister was. Anticipating my question while no doubt studying my face, she said "It's Bob Dylan. You like it? He's great".

It was in the spirit of Cherise, and the city I love and the musicians who help me love it, and of course the man who links us all, that I decided, with a little help from my friends Lloyd Fischler, Gary Silverman, Glenda Rother, Mojo Len and Bill Brownstein, to throw a Bob Dylan 70th birthday bash at Petit Cafe Campus. Every musician who was asked to play, for nothing but beer, played. Some waited nearly eight hours but they played their asses off. Gary and I tried to get a surprise special guest to show (Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Jimmy Lafave and Greg Keelor, among others, politely declined) but then it wouldn't have become the magical Montreal moment that it was. Jammed to beyond capacity, the front door was locked at some point after 9:30. Yes it was noisy, but shit happens in a bar. And the artists gave so much. Some of the most mesmerizing performances took place in the final hour in front of about 50 die hards who waited out 30 acts and nearly seven hours.

Among those still applauding at 3 AM was my sister, Rhona.

Sound Coming Down

I’ve never heard the silence of a crowd like at last week’s Gord Downie show in Sherbrooke.

Maybe silence is the wrong word. Quiet reverence, maybe. Or awe. Does awe make a sound?

It was at its most poignant during Steeplechase, a song off of his under-appreciated second solo album, Battle of the Nudes.

During a two-minute overture by his incredibly talented band, The Country of Miracles, Downie worked furiously in front of an old projector like the ones my teachers used in high school, and created a tableau that became the background art for the stage.

Almost instantaneously he had created a scene reminiscent of 9/11. Downie unveiled a cutout of a jet barreling towards a massive building. He then placed a clear plate over the cutout, and doused it with red acrylic.

Art and music fused into one. As the guitars beeped and he started to sing, the crowd grasped the poignancy of the moment.

“There’s a cruel, crumpling sound from over yonder by the steeplechase / it's the sound of coming down like horses slamming on the brakes"

It was a sound as unique as the show. I doubt I'll ever hear it again.

Bienvenue a Nellcote, home of the ventilator blues.

The 19th century mansion in the heart of the Cote D’Azur, Gestapo headquarters in the 40’s, the perfect tax haven for those know to walk before they’re made to run.

In the summer of 1971, Keith Richards rents Nellcote, and the boys set up shop to record what would become my desert island album, Exile on Main St.

To have been a fly on the wall in that basement…

This week, I picked up my fourth copy of Exile. Re-mastered this time. Much in the same vein as the Beatles set that came out last fall, the re-mastering offers the listener a much cleaner version of the album. For someone who has listened to Exile hundreds of times, the nuances between the old and new are very obvious, and sometimes revelatory.

For example, I never was overly crazy about what was arguably the band’s biggest commercial success on Exile, Tumbling Dice. I found it too muddled, and much preferred it in concert to the album. Truth be told, I’d often wade through the waste stormy winter right in to the arms of Sweet Virginia.

Finally, after 40 years, they shine a light. The orchestral arrangement of the song is beautiful. Mick no longer sounds like he’s singing with a bag over his head. Bill Wyman’s bass drives the song, and Mick Taylor’s solo never sounded so precise, or so sweet. It’s a perfectly crafted song, and who knew she had a partner in crime? More on her later…

If you know Exile intimately, then you’ll really get to appreciate with a clarity you’ve never heard- Bobby Keys’ sax solos on Casino Boogie, Charlie Watts’ drums on Casino Boogie, Nicky Hopkins’ piano on Casino Boogie, wait a second; Casino Boogie is a hell of a song.

All 18 songs are. And it’s great that they’re getting the 21st century treatment. Modern technology hasn’t figured out flying cars or teleportation, but they sure can re-master an LP, and make every song your favourite tune.

As cool as the album is, the bonus disc is a Stones fan’s dream. Ten songs, culled from the Exile demos, some so incomplete that the boys (including Mick Taylor, who left the band and was replaced by Ronnie Wood in ‘74) were brought in to fill in the blanks with the help of super producer Don Was.

Of the ten, two are different versions of songs from Exile- a Keith led ‘Soul Survivor’ with completely different lyrics and more horns, and a reworked ‘Loving Cup’ that lacks the flow of the original, but is great to hear nonetheless. ‘Pass the Wine’ is a hybrid of old music and new lyrics that thankfully continue the tradition of cocksure Stones sense and sensibility: “glad to be alive and kickin / glad to have a pot to piss in / so pass the wine / and let’s make some love”

'Plundered My Soul' and 'I’m Not Signifying' would fit right in on the original Exile, or Goat’s Head Soup, or Even Voodoo Lounge. They’re just classic, unabashed blues/rock Stones tracks. ‘Dancing in the Light’ deals with insecurity and heartbreak, but with the playful wink that Mick is famous for: “I’ve got a sinking feeling, who’s potatoes are you peeling?”

There are two songs that make the ‘New’ Exile shine. The first, ‘So Divine (Aladdin Song)’ is a smoky hazy Zeppelin influenced jam with a lead guitar that gives me goose bumps. Unlike most Jagger songs dealing with heartbreak (think Angie, Miss You, Fool to Cry, even Stupid Girl), So Divine finds Jagger angry and bitter: “You think your love is so divine / you pour it out like it was heaven scented wine/ you think your love is all I crave /well I’ve got better things to do than be your slave.”

Finally, ‘Good Time Women’ is the partner in crime to Tumbling Dice, or at least she’s her boozy, sexed up older sister. With a sped up ‘Dice’ as it’s theme, Mick’s relaxed drawl makes for a great contrast with the fast girls of whom he sings. This is a song that’s begging to be played back to back with Honky Tonk Woman on their next tour.

One week since the re release of Exile on Main St., and the Stones have once again reached #1 on the charts in the UK. A new tour is imminent, and the only question remains where it always has, on lead guitar. My buck says that after the success of new Exile Ronnie gets the boot, Mick Taylor gets his due, and he rejoins the band. They could even go back to Nellcote to record...

Somewhere in the swamps of Jersey

“Seeing Bruce Springsteen in New Jersey is like seeing a panda in China.”-Jon Stewart

For years I have been trying to explain to friends the significance of seeing Bruce Springsteen in concert. “It’s like I walked into church and was instantly converted,” I’d often say of my first show, which was back in 2003. I have never seen the Bell Centre as alive before or since.

Seeing him in the USA was something I had always wanted to experience. After hearing that Bruce would be performing the final concerts at Giants Stadium this fall, I relished the opportunity to see him in his home state, and in the venue that gave him the reputation as one of the few artists worth seeing in concert in a football stadium.

I woke up early, left Montreal before dawn, and made it to my friends Sam and Sarah’s place in Chelsea by noon. We were left with ample time for a pre show meal at the Chelsea Market and a quick look at the High Line, an amazing addition to what has become my favorite part of the city (http://www.thehighline.org/).

A quick change into my Rosalita shirt (“Now I know your mama she don’t like me ‘cause I play in a rock ‘n roll band”), and Sarah and I were off to Penn Station to catch a train that would take us through the swamps of Jersey to the Meadowlands.

We got there early, walked past the throng of tailgaters, and started talking with the amazing cross section of fans who were waiting with us at the gate. There was the family from Texas, dressed head to toe in Aggies gear out of fear of wearing their Cowboy colours in enemy territory, the dad and his son dressed head Bruce bandannas and tight jeans, even a lady in her 70’s, with a walker and a Greasy Lake t-shirt. Everyone was talking about who would show up to say goodbye to the stadium….Mick? Sir Elton? Southside Johnny? Did Bruce really pay a $3 million fine so that he could play till 2am?

Well, no. He didn’t. He "only" played for 3 and a quarter hours. And nobody else showed up except those who were expected. There was no disappointment to be had. At this party, the invited guests were all that we needed.

I’ve seen the Hip in Kingston, and Arcade Fire at the Bell, but I have never seen a crowd embrace their hometown son like they did that night. Bruce crowd surfed during an entire song, helped facilitate a marriage proposal in the pit, sang a duet with a little girl, and brought a bald guy on stage to dance with him (there’s hope for you, Melnick!). It didn’t matter where you were in that stadium, from the furthest distance you were still in the palm of his hand…

Twenty-five years ago, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band played Giants Stadium for the first time, on the Born in the USA tour. Twenty-Four sold out Giants Stadium concerts later; they would bring it full circle, and play the Born in the USA album from front to back. Hearing the one two punch of the plaintive and beautiful Bobby Jean and a stripped down and emotional I’m Goin Down brought the crowd to euphoric heights, at least it did in section 129…

One of the highlights of a Springsteen show is request time (if you’re close to the front at a Bruce show, bring a sign with a song you want to hear- if you’re lucky, he’ll play it!). Surprisingly, they played ‘I believe in Miracles’- “Where you from? You sexy thing!”. Fittingly, they also played the slowed down version of The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony, aka The Last Time by The Rolling Stones.

As the night began to wind down, and he started to play the opening lick to Kitty’s Back, I thought back to the first time I had heard the song, many years ago on Conan O’Brien. Watching Springsteen carry the song into the credits with Conan and guest Al Gore rocking along with, I wished that one day I would hear it in person.

Not exactly world peace, but I did get my wish that night. After he closed with Jersey Girl (the last dance, he called it), the lights came back on, and as if on cue from above, it began to pour.

Nobody cared. There’s praying at the church of rock ‘n roll, and then there’s attending Vatican mass with the Pope. Besides, like Catlong, ooh ooh what can I do?

What an Easter Monday night! I went to Club Il Motore on Jean Talon to see Deer Tick and arrived at 9:30 for an 8:00 show. There were two opening acts that I’d hoped to avoid, since I’d never heard of them. To my chagrin, the first band had not even taken the stage. What a blessing in disguise. I spent the next three and a half hours in Rock n’ Roll bliss.

The first band to take the stage was The Sunfields, a recently formed local act from Montreal. Fronted by charismatic Jason Kent (formerly of The Dears), this band had everyone in the club paying rapt attention. The fact that these guys remain unsigned, can only be temporary. They played an inspired set that reminded me of Neil Young, C.C.R., and The Band. They have warm, fuzzy and distorted guitar riffs reminiscent of Cowgirl In the Sand. The keyboards would make Garth Hudson and the late Richard Manuel smile, and they can quickly change gears to come at you with southern sounds and lyrics typical of John Fogerty. Next up, came Those Darlins. Three girls, Nikki, Jessi and Kelley Darlin on guitars with Sheriff Lin on drums. Hailing from Murfreesboro, TN, they bear no resemblance to your mother’s Nashville. They were a full frontal assault of every rock genre you could imagine with a hint of Patsy Cline thrown in. Add a touch of The Ramones and you start to get the idea. From their opening number that resembled a punked-up Dick Dale surf tune, they launched into a dozen or so, high energy, sometimes raunchy, straight ahead, rock, punk, country fusion numbers. All three accomplished guitar players took turns playing bass, and Nikki often played an amped ukulele. Their energy was infectious as they jumped off the stage and played guitar while they sang and danced with the throng of fans. They loved bantering with the audience and seemed genuinely at ease with cynical sarcasm. Many of the songs were off their self-titled debut album which has a touch more country influence than you get in live concert. To see them live, makes you wish that you could play guitar and drive around North America being a rock star! These girls are the real deal and leave nothing on the table at the end of the night. Another highlight was their cover of, Shakin’ All Over (written and recorded by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates and then made popular in North America by Chad Allen and The Expressions) They played it pretty much as written but with as much or more energy and attitude than most boy bands could hope to do. As an opening act, they left the stage with the crowd wanting more.

Finally, Deer Tick took the stage. Lead singer and songwriter John McCauley did not disappoint. Despite copious amounts of alcohol (especially vodka) he was amazingly lucid and clear when he began to sing. He hit every note, both verbally and with his guitar. It became quite clear that this band enjoyed a party. I haven’t followed this band long enough to know their entire backstory, but suffice to say, I believe that their classification as ‘Christian Rap’ is a sly inside joke. It reminds me of an episode of South Park where the boys form a band and then label themselves ‘Christian Rock’ to attract more followers. I applaud their irony! Their set was a mix of songs spanning “War Elephant” “Born on Flag Day” and their upcoming new release, “The Black Dirt Sessions.” The band was tight and the sound was clear throughout the show. As the drinks flowed, so did the songs. The set began with John announcing,“the last time I played this song, I ran off the stage and puked.” Next came, “Easy” and the intensity continued to increase for the next hour. As the set came to a crescendo with a rousing rendition of ZZ Top’s, “Cheap Sunglasses” The entire room was in a frenzy and hot with the anticipation of a smokin’ encore when the truly bizarre occurred. Everyone was watching and yet no one seems to be sure what happened. The keyboardist was wailing on the sax, one of the boys was shredding his axe while straddling an amp and John was playing guitar with his back to the audience. Unexpectedly, John launched himself awkwardly and face first into Dennis Ryan’s drum kit. He dove right onto the drums with his guitar and all. As the drums scattered and rolled away, Dennis attempted to continue playing. All eyes were on the fallen lead singer, wondering if he was ever going to get up. Dennis, the drummer abruptly stopped playing, gave a one fingered salute, and stormed off stage. As he got closer we could see that he was bleeding profusely from above his left eye. He looked like someone out of a Rob Zombie movie. He literally left a trail of blood from the stage to the back door. We all tried to figure out what had just happened. Was it a cymbal or guitar that did the damage? As the crowd stood in stunned silence, the erstwhile flying guitar-man ran back to apologize. The story coming from Dennis is that he had been hit with a thrown beer bottle. Wow! What an ending to a rock extravaganza! You couldn’t have written a finer ending (with apologies to Dennis.) No one knows what actually happened. Theories abound about a grassy knoll and one lone bottle. Apparently, three homeless looking concertgoers were seen leaving the show wearing new shoes.

I've always wanted to see Henry Rollins speak. That's no misnomer. I've heard about his legendary spoken word performances in their Springsteenesque length. But, somehow I've always been too busy to catch him. Finally caught up to Rollins last night at Le National, thankfully (as it turned out) missing the Canadiens-Senators match up at the Bell Centre.

I brought my 19 year old daughter Jade to the old theatre and made sure she didn't know anything about Rollins other than the punk bands he used to front, Black Flag and the Rollins Band. Try to resist the urge to look him up on YouTube I almost pleaded with her and she co-operated, having no idea what to expect when we settled into our seats in the balcony at about 8 oclock.

Rollins jumped out a few minutes later, grabbed the microphone and didn't move for nearly three hours. He didn't stop talking either, not for a second. Not even to sip some water. In fact there was no bottle of water for him to sip from. I've never seen anything like it, except perhaps, Jimmy Stewart fillibusting on the floor of the U.S. Senate in "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington".

Rollins riffed on Anne Coulter-invited by the "Young Conservative douche bags" to speak at University of Ottawa (where he will be at the same time), health care, Madame Tussaud, Michelle Obama, George W Bush, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, David Duke, Barack Hussein Obama, John McCain, U.S. election night, RuPaul, homosexual fantasies, gay rights, racism, sexism, pluralism, censorship, travelling the world while spreading the gospel of punk and rock, The Damned, Bad Brains, The Stooges, masturbation and free speech.

It was a tour de force. And I thought hosting a four hour talk show was challenging. It's clear Rollin's brain works at a whole other level. He's still got the amazing energy he used to have when fronting his bands only now it's his brain and mouth that work in tandem and as a primary instrument. And as long as he's "rested and straight" he needs no other accompaniment.

I won't recount highlites other than to say his takes on and tales of Sarah Palin and her offspring, playing a white supremacist on the tv series Sons Of Anarchy and delivering a commencement address at Sonoma State University in California last May were howlers.

It was just before 11 Pm when I turned to my daughter for some reaction that didn't include laughter. "Thanks for taking me. He spoke twice as long as some of my classes but it seemed to move twice as fast".

A great teacher, that Henry Rollins.

ARCTIC MONKEYS BAH HUMBUG

So I get a text Sunday that someone has two tickets for me to see the Arctic Monkeys this past Monday night. The guy says he is going to the Habs game and cant use them. After Monday night seems like we may have both lost.

I saw the Arctic Monkey back a couple of years ago when they first came on to the music scene. The first album was high energy and so was the show. That show was so memorable for me for an odd reason. As I stood outside someone asked me how old I was. As I told them ( 35 at the time), they responded..." WOW Good for you!! Coming to these shows will keep you young!!"

Fast forward three years..Two albums later the band continues to impress critics with the new album which is a little more mellow. Too bad ..

I may have aged three years..maybe even found some grey on my head..but if I wanted mellow I would wait for Air Supply to come back..

The concert itself ran along the lines of the album..Some mellow, some higher energy..some well lots that sounded like one long song!
The best way to enjoy the show was be part of the mosh pit and get a better feel for the show..I stood back with my buddy, watched the 15 year old kids take pictures on the iphones, text on the blackberry and realize I wish it I was put back into a time machine to be at a Ramones show..

Ive never left a show early in my life..I left this one at the encore.

As i left the show there were no comments for me about my age...All the kids were too busy messaging their friends next to them.

Jay-Z triumphed at the Bell Centre on October 30th. Having been in the hip-hop game since his legendary 1996 release “Reasonable Doubt”, this Brooklyn boy has managed to stay relevant and real.

The three opening acts, for the most part, successfully satisfied the antsy audience as they awaited the arrival of a true hip-hop superstar.

Rapper J-Cole, featured on Jay-Z’s latest release, The Blueprint 3, performed a short set of three songs, charming the spectators with his lively personality and stage presence.

Next up was Wale, hailing from Washington, D.C, accompanied by his hype-man, a completely unnecessary component to his act. His whiny singing voice served less as a support outlet and more like a distraction. Wale immediately confessed to the crowd how grateful he is that Montreal “gave his city a baseball team”. This playful taunt surely engaged the audience almost as much as when he strolled into the seats during his last song, letting the lucky people on the floor get rowdy. The highlight of his performance was the backing band who played an unexpected cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”.

The final opener, N.E.R.D, led by front man Pharrell Williams, is the ideal act to hype up any crowd. I last saw them a couple years ago when they joined Kanye “I’m the Best” West on his Glow in the Dark Tour, and their energetic, animated live show never seizes to impress.

Jay-Z, rising from a platform below the stage, dressed sharply like Johnny Cash “in all black everything”, echoing the lyrics to his most recent single “Run This Town” and the song that opened the show, was greeted like a God. His last Montreal concert was a decade ago. Old fans were glad to have him back, ready to savour each song they’ve been listening to for years. Young fans, like the little boy brought up onstage, his first time seeing Jay in concert, in awe of this smooth, classy New Yorker whose style and natural Brooklyn swagger they try so eagerly to emulate. There were more Yankee caps in the crowd than at a ballgame at Yankee Stadium. Mr. Shawn Carter entertained his admirers with non-stop classic Jay songs chosen from his vast repertoire of hits. He performed a handful of tracks off of The Blueprint 3, devoted to each one, each rhyme, each syllable. He was having fun too, feeding off the fans as their energy level got higher and higher with each song, forcing them to their feet for the entire show. His encore consisted of a stream of hits, closing with “Young Forever”, the final song off his latest album. It made my friend’s eyes tear up and definitely gave me the best kind of shivers. The most moving moment, however, was when Jay singled out specific individuals in the crowd, letting them know that he noticed them and cared that they were there. Leaving the stage from the same platform he arrived, he looked as powerful as The Statue of Liberty. Like the lady in the harbour, Jay Z is the real thing.
